Birding holidays in Scotland

About our holidays

Scotland is unquestionably one of Europe’s top wildlife watching destinations and offers a diversity of habitats from coast, to hill, to loch that not only offer splendid and dramatic beauty but are home to some of our most enigmatic birds, Dotterel, Ptarmigan, Crested Tit, Capercaillie and every birder's must see species, the Golden Eagle. In addition, who could fail to be excited by Merlin, Hen Harrier, Black  and Red Grouse, Osprey and White- tailed Eagle!

Our short break holidays are fantastic for beginners and for those wanting an introduction to birding in Scotland. At Wild Caledonia we aim to pull together many of Scotland’s top fieldworkers and birders and bring you close to the species of Scotland. We will endeavour to make your holiday a success by providing you with the opportunity to, 'see' the best of Scotland and by sharing our expertise with you, 'experience' the best of Scotland.

Our holidays are unique and are run in conjunction with members of the Scottish Raptor Study Groups, some of whom are employed by the Forestry Commission, RSPB, Loch Lomond National Park and a number of prestigious highland estates.

Wild Caledonia is a birding company for birders by birders. Our team comprises experienced fieldworkers, many of whom are recognised experts with their chosen species which include Sea Eagle, Golden Eagle, Capercaillie, Hen Harrier, Osprey, Bean Goose, Greenland White-Fronted Goose, Scottish Crossbill, Crested Tit, Black Throated Diver, Slavonian Grebe and a host of top Scottish birds. Good fieldwork means that we will increase your chances of having spectacular views without adversely affecting the birds in their natural habitat. Our dedication to conserving, protecting and studying our special birds and mammals means the minimum necessary time travelling, more time birding and equates to a very special holiday.

The sites that we will visit have been carefully selected to ensure Access for All. This means that we will aim to see birds that inhabit the most remote areas. In accomplishing this, Wild Caledonia is indebted to a number of highland estates which have allowed us access. Combining our knowledge of the raptor species that hunt in many of these areas, we will give you the best possible chance of obtaining the most memorable views of many of Scotland’s rarest birds.

Wild Caledonia's experiences extend throughout Scotland's birding hotspots. Our holidays start within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and are designed to take you to many of Scotland's most scenic and iconic locations. Birdwatching as we go, we will see some beautiful places and spectacular wildlife.

Some of our breaks venture deep into the Central Highlands, visiting arctic landscapes such as the Cairngorm mountains, or atmospheric ancient habitats like the Caledonian Pine Forests, all in search of Scotland's speciality species.

We will also take you to see other natural spectacles such as feeding otters, herds of red deer, red squirrels, pine martens and if we're in the right place at the right time, dolphins, whales and basking sharks. In our experience, cetaceans are more often encountered during the July and August Argyll and the Isles holiday.

The awe inspiring West Coast is rugged and dramatic where hill lochs pepper the uplands and  mountains literally rise from out of the sea. Let us share this most stunning and spectacular of backdrops with you.
